Congress Hall, the large wood-framed resort hotel on Cape May's oceanfront, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of American resorts made around the turn of the twentieth century. Cape May had been a fashionable seaside destination since the early 1800s, drawing summer visitors from Philadelphia and beyond who came for the beach, the sea air and the grand hotels that lined the shore. Congress Hall, dating in its earliest form to 1816, was among the best known of these establishments, and the company's photographers recorded such buildings to sell as postcards and souvenir views.
