Albany's City Hall, a Romanesque Revival building designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and completed in the early 1880s, is the subject of this view. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which between about 1900 and 1910 photographed towns, landmarks and scenery across the country for its catalog and for promotional use by railroads. Glass plates like this one were the working originals from which prints were made. The number inscribed on the negative and the firm's catalog number tie it to the company's files, which is how the image was later identified.
