Few schools in upstate New York have a longer history than the Albany Academy, a boys' school founded in 1813 in the state capital. This 8 x 10 inch glass negative, dated between 1900 and 1910, comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm best known for its travel views and color prints of American cities and landscapes. Because the company photographed places to sell to the public, its pictures of civic institutions like this one show how such buildings presented themselves at the turn of the twentieth century. The record notes that the negative was a 1949 gift to the Library of Congress from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
