The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, made this glass-plate negative of cadets at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, sometime between 1890 and 1901, a date inferred from the company's own catalog of that era. The academy, founded in 1845 and home to midshipmen training for careers at sea, is shown here in a formal military setting that the subject headings describe as a parade or ceremony. The company was known for large-format views of American places, and its work offers a useful record of how the Academy looked and how its cadets were drilled at the turn of the century.
