Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, are shown here running through a skirmish drill, a close-order exercise in which small groups of men advance, spread out, and take cover as a unit. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced large numbers of views of American cities, landmarks and institutions around 1900 and sold them as photographic prints and postcards. Because the company's catalog dates this series to 1901, the picture likely captures a training routine of the late 1890s or early 1900s, when the academy's students spent much of their time on rifle and infantry instruction alongside their naval studies.
