Rifles carried along a walkway set this view of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, apart as a scene of drill and daily military routine. The academy, founded in 1845 to train officers for the Navy, was a place of strict order for its midshipmen, and the rifles suggest that discipline was on display. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities, landscapes and institutions, and its catalog dates the picture to before 1901.
