Taken in New York Harbor on April 27, 1893, this view records the Columbian Naval Review, a naval parade held during the commemorations of the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas. The review took place the same year as the Chicago World's Fair, the Columbian Exposition, and brought together American and foreign warships before large crowds along the waterfront. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its wide photographic record of American scenes around 1900. It is especially useful for studying the design and arrangement of the naval vessels of the period.
