Grant's Tomb, the granite mausoleum overlooking the Hudson River in New York City, is the subject here, shown during the naval parade held in honor of Admiral George Dewey after his victory at Manila Bay in 1898. The celebration drew large crowds and a long procession of vessels up the Hudson, and the boats visible in the view place the tomb in the middle of that festive river traffic. Photographs of the parade were made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which was known for its color and black-and-white views of American cities and landmarks at the turn of the century. Grant had died in 1885, and his tomb, completed in 1897, was still a relatively new monument when the fleet passed.
