Grant's Tomb, the granite mausoleum overlooking the Hudson River in New York City, is the focal point here, with boats crowding the water below as the naval parade passed on September 29, 1899. That parade was part of the celebration for Admiral George Dewey, the naval hero of the Battle of Manila Bay earlier that year, and the river was lined with vessels and spectators for the occasion. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely to document American landmarks and events around the turn of the century. Its attribution to the photographer Hart is an inference from similar negative numbers, so it is worth treating with some care.
