Small rowboats crowd the water in this 1893 view, ahead of a boat race held during the Columbian Naval Review on the Hudson River near New York. The review was staged the same year as the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and it brought warships from several nations to New York to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this glass dry plate negative, was known for documenting American towns, landscapes and public events in this period, so the picture offers a record of how spectators and oarsmen gathered for the festivities.
