The building named here as the Jeffersonian Hotel is recorded as possibly standing in Detroit, so its location remains an open question for researchers. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative dates from sometime between 1890 and 1915, when hotels were often among the grandest commercial buildings on a city street. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the view, was a commercial firm known for large-format pictures of cities, resorts and landscapes sold as prints and postcards. The plate reached the Library of Congress in 1949 as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
