The Sheldon Hotel stood in Wildwood, a Cape May County shore town that grew into a popular seaside resort after railroads brought vacationers to its beaches in the late 1800s. This view was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative between 1900 and 1915, when Detroit Publishing Company photographers were documenting resort hotels and attractions for travel promotion. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949. Large-format glass plates like this one preserve the building's façade and surroundings in fine detail.
