The Hotel Alcazar, built by Henry Flagler in the late 1880s, was one of the Spanish Renaissance-style resort hotels that helped make St. Augustine a winter destination for wealthy northern visitors. This picture is a panorama made from two large glass negatives, showing the hotel together with its annex. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many views of American resorts and scenery around 1900, issued these images to promote travel, so the picture doubles as a record of how a Gilded Age hotel presented itself to prospective guests.
