The Hotel Magnolia was one of the many hotels that served visitors to St. Augustine, Florida, the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the continental United States. After Henry Flagler's railroad reached the town in the late 1880s, the city grew into a winter resort for wealthy northerners, and hotels like this one were central to that trade. This picture survives as an 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented resorts and scenic places for tourists in the years around 1900. The negative's later donation to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 helped preserve it.
