Aiken, South Carolina, was a winter retreat for wealthy visitors from the Northeast and Midwest, drawn by its mild climate, sandy pine woods, and horse culture. This view of the Park in the Pines Hotel, one of the resort's lodgings, was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative between about 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold views of American places during those years, catalogued it under number 033494. Such images documented the hotels and grounds that catered to seasonal guests.
