The picture shows the Albion Hotel alongside a Confederate monument in Augusta, Georgia, a pairing that makes the streetscape a record of how the town remembered the Civil War. Southern communities raised many such obelisks and memorials in the decades after 1865, often in the 1880s through the early 1900s, when the Lost Cause movement shaped public commemoration. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns and landmarks for sale to the public, made the image around 1900 to 1910 as a large glass plate negative. Its catalog number and the gift record from the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 trace its later path into the Library of Congress collection.
