Monument Circle, the plaza at the heart of downtown Indianapolis, is dominated here by the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the city's best-known landmark. Completed in 1902 to honor Indiana men who served in the Civil War, the limestone and granite shaft was designed by German architect Bruno Schmitz and topped with a bronze figure of Victory. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view around 1904, when the circle was already a busy downtown crossroads and the monument was still new. The 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the plaza as the city presented it in the early twentieth century.
