A Civil War soldiers' monument anchors this view of Pine Grove Park in Port Huron, Michigan, a river city at the state's eastern edge. Memorials like it went up in towns across the North in the decades after 1865, when communities raised them to honor local men who had served in the Union army. The image is an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose town views were widely circulated, and its date is estimated from the company's 1906 catalog.
