Sanitarium Park in Alma, a city in Gratiot County in central Michigan, takes its name from the health institution that once drew visitors there. Around the turn of the twentieth century, sanitariums like this one offered rest cures, fresh air, bathing and hydrotherapy, and a quiet setting that many Americans of the period believed would restore health. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large 8 x 10 inch glass negative, sold views of resorts and towns across Michigan and other states, so the picture records how a place of recuperation looked to the travelers and tourists it was meant to attract.
