A gate at the entrance to Pine Grove Park in Port Huron, Michigan, bears an inscription stating that the park was bequeathed to the people of Port Huron by Charles Albert Ward, along with the date 1907. The view comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm known for its large-format views of towns, parks, and travel destinations, active from the 1890s into the 1920s. The gate itself is the main subject, so the picture records a civic gift in the form the donor chose to mark it. The negative is an 8 x 10 inch glass plate, a format that captured fine detail in outdoor scenes.
