Military Street in Port Huron, Michigan, is the subject here, a commercial thoroughfare on the St. Clair River shore that the Detroit Publishing Company recorded in its catalog of American views. The photograph was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate sometime between 1900 and 1910, a period when the company's photographers traveled the country documenting towns, rail lines and main streets for sale as postcards and prints. Shops and commercial buildings along such streets were the everyday fabric of small Great Lakes cities, and the glass negative preserves the storefronts and street life of that era in fine detail.
