This view shows the Indian River in northern Michigan, where a bridge crosses the slow, narrow stream on the inland route between Cheboygan and Petoskey. The river links Burt Lake and Mullett Lake, and the region drew summer visitors to its lakes and resorts in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1910, sold views like this to promote travel and to show off the state's landscapes. Its wooded banks and bridge reflect how the company framed rural waterways as places to visit.
