A steamboat named the *Republic* lies at a pier on the Indian River, and a sign at the dock reads "For St. Augustine and Palm Beach," naming the destinations it served. Boats like this carried winter visitors, mail and freight along Florida's east coast, linking inland lagoon towns to Atlantic resorts that grew quickly after railroads reached them in the 1890s. The Detroit Publishing Company produced many views like this one to promote travel, and its large glass negative keeps fine detail in the boat, the dock and the sign.
