A Fall River Line steamer is the focus of this view, taken from the roof of the Hotel Mellen in Fall River, Massachusetts. The line's boats ran overnight between Fall River and New York City across Long Island Sound, carrying passengers and freight and tying the mill city to the wider Atlantic coast. Fall River had grown rich on cotton textile manufacturing in the late 1800s, and its waterfront was busy in the years between 1910 and 1920, when this glass negative was made. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the picture, sold its city views widely as prints and postcards.
