The Tomoka River winds through the Ormond Beach area on Florida's east coast, a stretch of tidal marsh and slow water that drew winter visitors to the region's hotels in the early 1900s. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, waterways and resorts for travel albums and postcards during those years. Its plates capture the quiet, shaded landscape that visitors came to see, and the large format gives fine detail in the water and vegetation along the riverbank.
