The Halifax River at Ormond, Florida, is the subject here, and the title hedges between sunrise and moonlight, a reminder of how hard it can be to read the hour from a glass negative. The river is a broad tidal lagoon that separates the mainland from the barrier beach, and by the 1900s Ormond had become a winter resort, reached by Henry Flagler's railway down the east coast. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass plate, sold views of such places to travelers and promoters, so the picture was likely meant to show off the calm water and the appeal of the Florida coast.
