Fish docks lined the Miami River in Miami, Florida, where fishing boats unloaded their catch for sale in the years before the city became a major resort destination. The Miami River had long served as a working waterway, and Miami was growing quickly after Henry Flagler's railroad reached the settlement in 1896. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this large glass negative between 1900 and 1920, sent photographers across the country to document towns, rail lines and waterfronts for travel promotion. The picture is a useful record of the dockside commercial life that existed alongside the city's early tourism.
