East 12th Street in Miami, shown here through a row of residences, was photographed sometime between 1900 and 1915, a period when the city was expanding quickly after Henry Flagler's railroad reached it in 1896. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass negative made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that sent photographers across the country to document towns and scenery for sale as views. The record notes a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado. Street scenes like this one show how early residential blocks in Miami were laid out and built.
