The wharves at the foot of the Commandancia and Tarragona Street in Pensacola, Florida, take their names from the city's Spanish colonial past. Pensacola changed hands several times between Spain, Britain, and the United States, and the Spanish street names and the old Commandancia site still marked its waterfront when this glass negative was made around 1900 to 1905. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns, rail lines, and scenery for commercial use, produced the image, and its large-format negative shows the working piers and shipping activity that tied the port to regional trade.
