Six glass plates, joined as a panorama, sweep across Pensacola Bay's waterfront, with piers, wharves, and ships tied up along the shore. Pensacola was a major Gulf Coast port in the early 1900s, and its harbor shipped large quantities of yellow pine lumber from the surrounding forests, so the scene reflects the timber trade that shaped the city's economy. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its wide-ranging views of American towns, ports, and landscapes, made the negatives around the turn of the twentieth century. The sequence records a working waterfront at a time when the lumber trade was at its height.
