Six glass negatives record one continuous panorama of Pensacola Harbor on Florida's Gulf coast, with piers, wharves, and moored ships stretching across the water. The subjects listed for the set emphasize the lumber trade, which made Pensacola one of the busy shipping ports of the Gulf South in the years around 1900, when yellow pine cut in the surrounding region moved out by sea. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced and sold views of American towns, harbors, and scenery during this period, made the set. Its six plates, labeled 541 G through 546 G, show how the company captured wide working waterfronts.
