Here the Plaza Ferdinand VII is seen from the side with the William Dudley Chipley obelisk at its center, the custom house and post office to the right, and a tall bank building at the far right edge. The plaza takes its name from the Spanish king whose colonial government shaped the town's early street plan, so the open square has long served as Pensacola's civic heart. Chipley was a railroad promoter whose lines helped connect the city to the wider region. The glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s for postcards and printed views.
