Cathedral Place, as this view is titled, is the old Plaza de la Constitución in St. Augustine, Florida, with the cathedral forming one side of the open square. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1565, and the plaza has served as a civic and religious center ever since. By about 1906, when this was made, the city was drawing winter tourists from the North, and the Detroit Publishing Company sent photographers to such destinations to sell views to travelers. The two near-identical negatives suggest the photographer made retakes, perhaps to get the light right on the plaza.
