Built by Henry Flagler as the centerpiece of his growing Florida resort empire, the Ponce de Leon Hotel rose in St. Augustine, the oldest European-founded city in the continental United States, and opened in 1888. Its Spanish Renaissance Revival towers and red-tiled roofs, designed by the New York firm Carrère and Hastings, set a model for resort architecture across the state. This view survives as one section of a multi-plate panorama made on large glass negatives by the W.H. Jackson firm, whose negatives later passed to the Detroit Publishing Company. The record dates the set to either 1887 or 1889, placing it near the hotel's earliest years.
