St. Augustine, founded by Spanish settlers in 1565, is the oldest continuously occupied European-established city in the continental United States, and this view records one of its Presbyterian churches at a time when the town was changing quickly. From the late 1880s, Henry Flagler's railroad and hotels turned the old colonial town into a winter resort, drawing wealthy visitors and new congregations. The photograph is attributed to William Henry Jackson, who photographed towns across the country for guidebooks and publications. Large glass negatives like this one, about 5 by 7 inches, capture architectural detail that smaller formats often lost.
