Centennial Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tennessee, is the subject of this 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative, made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, produced large numbers of views of American towns, streets, and buildings, and its photographers often worked for commercial sale to a wide public. Knoxville was a growing city in the early 1900s, and its churches were central to neighborhood life, so the building offers a glimpse of the architecture and street scene of that period. The negative's handwritten and printed marks, including the company's catalog number, help date and identify it.
