This view of St. Paul's Church in Norfolk, Virginia, is catalogued with a fountain, which suggests the churchyard or its grounds are part of the frame. The parish is one of the oldest Anglican, later Episcopal, congregations in the city, and its colonial roots reach back to the 1600s. The plate was made sometime between about 1890 and 1910, when Norfolk was growing as a port and rail hub and photographers were documenting its streets and landmarks. The Detroit Publishing Company, which assembled this collection, was a commercial firm that sold views of American towns and sites to a wide public.
