Dry dock no. 2 at the Norfolk Navy Yard, across the Elizabeth River in Portsmouth, Virginia, was one of the working docks that let the Navy repair and refit its warships in the years around 1900. Dry docks were built as enclosed basins that could be pumped empty, so a hull resting on the blocks could be scraped, painted and repaired above the waterline. The Norfolk yard had been a center of naval work since the early 1800s, and its docks were central to keeping the fleet in service. This glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled the country recording towns, industry and waterfronts in the decades before 1910.
