Here the subject is the Russian cruiser *Admiral Nakhimov*, which the catalog record spells "Machinoff." The ship was part of the Columbian Naval Review of 1893, a gathering of foreign and American warships held in and around New York in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage. Russia sent a squadron, and the event drew large crowds to the Hudson River waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which was known for its photographs of American and foreign scenes, produced views like this one for sale to the public, so the image also records how a major maritime ceremony was presented to people at the time.
