The house pictured here stands within the Pensacola Navy Yard in Florida, a base established in 1826 on Pensacola Bay and one of the oldest naval installations on the Gulf Coast. Officers' quarters on such yards were typically large, raised frames houses set among shade trees, reflecting the rank of the commandant who lived there and the social life of a remote station. The photograph is a glass dry plate negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, rail lines and landmarks in the years around 1900. Its catalog entry dates it to between 1890 and 1901.
