The Russian corvette *Rynda* was one of the foreign warships that took part in the Columbian Naval Review of 1893, a gathering of fleets on the Hudson off New York that marked the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas. Such visits drew large crowds and gave the visiting navies a prominent place in the celebrations. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative is attributed to a photographer named Hart on the basis of similar negative numbers, and it was later printed as part of the Detroit Publishing Company's large series of American views.
