The Infanta Isabel was a Spanish cruiser, and this glass negative records her during the Columbian Naval Review of 1893, a maritime display held in New York Harbor to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage to the Americas. Warships from many nations gathered for the event, and the ceremonial parades drew large crowds to the waterfront. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch negative, was known for its wide range of views of American and international places and events, so the picture offers a useful record of how the fleet appeared at the time.
