The Niña was the smallest of the three ships that carried Columbus across the Atlantic in 1492, and Spain sent a replica of it to the United States for the 400th anniversary of that voyage. This glass negative likely records the ship at one of the American events of 1892 or 1893, either the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago or the Columbian Naval Review in New York. The Detroit Publishing Company, which produced the plate, was known for its broad coverage of travel and public events, so its images of such commemorations show how the country marked Columbus's legacy at the turn of the century.
