Few pictures in this collection show a foreign warship as directly as this glass plate of the Russian corvette Rynda, whose name the original jacket spelled "Rynoda" before cataloguers corrected it. Rynda was a government vessel of the Imperial Russian Navy, and the plate dates from between 1890 and 1901, a period when Russia was modernizing its fleet and the Detroit Publishing Company was building its catalog of travel views. Made as an 8-by-10-inch dry plate negative, the image could be printed in quantity, so the ship's hull and rigging are recorded with the clarity of a commercial survey.
