Spanish troops leaving Havana on January 1, 1899, mark the close of Spain's nearly four centuries of rule over Cuba, which ended after the Spanish-American War of 1898. The Spanish army withdrew from the island in the weeks after the peace arrangements, and the departure of its soldiers by ship was a visible sign of the transfer of control to the United States. The picture was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely and sold views of places and events, and the glass negative was later catalogued by the company around 1901.
