On January 1, 1899, the 18th-century fortress of Cabanas, which guards the entrance to Havana harbor, was handed over from Spanish to American control. The transfer followed Spain's defeat in the Spanish-American War and the Treaty of Paris, which ended Spanish rule in Cuba. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for documenting places and events across the United States and abroad, recorded the scene on this 8 x 10 glass negative, which offers a rare view of the moment when the fort changed hands.
