Kimball's Castle, the stone summer residence on Belknap Point, is the subject here, and the record places it on Welch Island in Lake Winnipesaukee, New Hampshire's largest lake. The glass negative dates to about 1906, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing resorts and scenic spots across the country to promote tourism and rail travel. Its large 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in the castle's masonry and its lakeside setting. The picture shows how wealthy visitors of the era built showy vacation homes in the Northeast's lake country.
