A wooden wharf reaching out over Lake Winnipesaukee in Tuftonboro, New Hampshire, is the subject of this view, which the catalog records under the earlier place name "Melvin." The Detroit Publishing Company made photographs like this around 1906 to show the country's scenic and resort destinations, and it sold many of them to railroads and travel promoters. Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest lake in the state, drew summer visitors by steamer and rail in that era, and a landing like this one was where passengers and supplies came ashore. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative records the fine detail of the planks and shoreline.
