Endicott Rock sits beside the outlet of Lake Winnipesaukee, where the lake's water begins its run toward the Merrimack River, and this view records the boulder and its surroundings around 1906. The rock is tied to the legend of John Endicott, the Massachusetts Bay Colony governor, whose party is traditionally credited with carving initials and a date into it in 1632 to mark the claim. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that sent photographers across the country to document scenic and historic sites, made the negative, which helps explain its focus on the rock as a landmark for travelers.
