A quiet stretch of shoreline at Weirs, the summer resort village where Lake Winnipesaukee narrows near Laconia, New Hampshire, is the focus of this view. Around 1906, Weirs drew vacationers who arrived by rail and steamboat to stay in lakeside hotels and cottages, and the area was a popular subject for commercial photographers. This image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that produced large numbers of travel views of American landmarks for sale to tourists and railroads. Its 8 by 10 inch glass negative records the landscape with the clarity of a large-format plate, showing how the lake's edge looked before the crowds of later decades.
